Information for Prospective Board
Members
ILHS Mission
To provide homes and support to
people with physical and/or cognitive disabilities
to maintain and enhance independent lifestyles.
Who We Are
The Independent Living Housing
Society of Greater Victoria (ILHS) was established in 1976
by a group of people who lived at the Gorge Road
Hospital in its Extended Care Unit. They shared the
desire to live a more independent lifestyle free of
institutional constraints, and met to discuss new
and innovative options. Four of those people decided
they were compatible and could live together, and
were willing to be responsible for paying the rent,
looking after the house, and hiring and firing
Residential Care Workers. The first home was a
renovated and modified home in the Swan Lake area
which opened on May 25, 1976.
The Independent Living Housing
Society (ILHS) now supports individuals in six supported
living environments. This includes apartments,
shared living, group homes and a respite home.
What We Provide
Independent Living Housing Society of
Greater Victoria is a non-profit organization,
governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Founded
in 1976, we provide group homes, a respite care
home, and apartments. The organization consists of
approximately 80 employees providing care to 24
clients and 20 respite guests.
The Society acts as the
administrative body while promoting, encouraging and
supporting clients to:
-
Develop independent living skills to
the best of their ability
-
Become involved in their community
-
Live in a manner consistent with
their needs, interests and capabilities
-
Be fully involved in all independent
living decisions
-
Maintain their individuality,
dignity, privacy and confidentiality
The Society will make provisions for
a comprehensive range of services in a consistent
coordinated manner reflecting a common philosophy
and will work co-operatively with other private,
public and professional groups which support our
mission and philosophy.
Board
Responsibilities
”The Board is the legal employer of
all staff and, as such, is responsible for working
conditions in the organization...The Board is
responsible for hiring, giving direction to and
evaluating the Executive Director.”*
Working closely with the Executive
Director, the Board of Directors has a varied but
yet an equally important role. The objective of this
