It’s about Quality Of Life…
Nanaimo Community Hospice
Society welcomes you to our way of life.
Hospice is a philosophy, not a place, and
its focus is on celebrating life and living
each day to the fullest. The hospice
philosophy embraces a holistic approach and
respects that each unique individual
deserves to live an alert, pain free life
grounded in dignity and respect.
Derived from the Latin word
“hospitum” or “hospitality”, the hospice
movement started in England in the 1940’s
and has expanded across the world. All of
the Nanaimo Community Hospice programs
embrace the hospice philosophy of honoring
the body, mind and spirit of each person
served.
For each of us, the life
journey will eventually lead to death.
In Canada it is estimated that for each
death that occurs at least 5 others are
directly impacted in areas such as
caregiving and bereavement. Our
hospice goal is to ease the fear in transitions, answer questions honestly,
provide compassionate support and help everyone
live each day fully. The hospice philosophy
validates each life and hopes that in the
journey towards death people find meaning in
their own lives.
When diagnosed with life
threatening illness, the hospice philosophy
recognizes that despite medical advances a
cure is not always possible.
The Nanaimo Community Hospice
Society promotes self-determination and
client and family participation in all plans of care and
through skilled compassionate support,
education, and advocacy invites people to
manage their illness while promoting their
quality of life. The hospice philosophy
values each person’s unique life journey and
encourages everyone to take an active part in
current life and end-of-life plans whether
in the home, a care facility or hospital.
Grief and caregiver support
are important
component of the Nanaimo Community Hospice
Society and our support extends to family
and friends so they can live their lives to
the fullest both before and after the loss
of their special person.
Volunteers are the backbone
of Nanaimo Community Hospice Society. All
of our formally trained, dedicated
volunteers give willingly of themselves to
enhance the quality of life of everyone they
work with. Our compassionate staff and
volunteers welcome the opportunity to be a
part of your life.
We invite you to explore the
mystery of life and of death and hope you
will seek out our unique
programs and services. Join us as we celebrate living
life to the fullest and improve the quality
of living and of dying.
