Special Characters

By mySeniorSite Staff

Have you ever wondered how you can make special characters with your keyboard?

For instance, you want to insert the copyright symbol (©) into your document without going through the many steps in the work processing program you're using. All you need to do is hold down the ALT key and type in a number and voila, the symbol appears.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Press the Number Lock key

  2. Hold down the ALT key on your keyboard

  3. Type the number that corresponds with the symbol you wish to insert.

  4. Release the ALT key and there it is!

Here's a list of the common symbols:

© = ALT + 0169

® = ALT + 0174

™ = ALT + 0153

½ = ALT + 171

¼ = ALT + 172

Keep in mind that you must use the number pad on the right hand side of your keyboard. It won't work if you use the numbers above the letter keys.
