Seniors Discount

ICBC recognizes the safe driving habits of our more experienced drivers by offering a 25% discount to motorists over 65 years of age, who QUALIFY for a "seniors" rate classification.

To QUALIFY there are more factors involved than just age. The vehicle can NEVER be driven to a place of work, or be used in any business or commercial venture. This applies to the owner, named principle operator and anyone who borrows the vehicle.

The vehicle can be used to drive children and grand children (of school age) to school. No one, other than the owner or named principle operator on the policy, can use the vehicle to drive themselves to school. If the owner or named principle operator are enrolled in a part time course at school they are allowed to drive themselves to school up to 6 times a calendar month.

This all sounds very complicated. The easiest way to remember the rules for the seniors rate class are by examples.

1) Your granddaughter calls to borrow your car to take to school because hers is broken down. You can't lend it to her, but if she is under the age of 19 you can drive her to school.

2) Your son wants to borrow your pick up truck to take supplies to his work that won't fit in his car. Due to your rate class restrictions you can't lend it to him, nor can you drive him as the vehicle can NEVER be driven to a place of work.

3) Your grandson asks to borrow the car to take a girl to a movie. You can definitely lend him your car.

A vehicle with a seniors discount cannot be registered in a company name. It must be in the name of an individual, or jointly owned individuals.

It is very important that the owner of the vehicle and the named principle operator both be 65 years of age or older. In cases of joint ownership only one of the owners must be 65, but the individual who is not 65 cannot be named as the principle operator.

ICBC’s offer of a 25% discount to seniors is an example of keeping insurance rates low and stable in BC.

In summary, the seniors rate class is a reduced rate as it is designed for experienced drivers (over 65) who use the vehicle for pleasure purposes. We recommend you discuss this with your Autoplan broker.
