Signs of the Times

How well do you know your road signs? Sure, we all recognize the red octagon that is the worldwide symbol for STOP but how about:

There are 3 ways to read road signs: by their shape, by their colour and by the messages printed on them. Understanding these 3 ways of classifying signs will help you figure out the meaning of signs that are unfamiliar to you.

There are a lot of signs along our roads and highways. Being able to recognize traffic signs is essential for safe driving.

To learn more about signs, signals and road markings, check out the RoadSense for Drivers manual. A hard copy of the manual can be picked up at any ICBC Driver Services Centre or you can view and download a copy online at www.icbc.com

And in case you still haven’t figured out the two signs at the top of this article, the first one warns of a swinging or opening bridge ahead. The second sign is a regulatory sign indicating that passing is not permitted on this road.

In driving, as in life, it is helpful to be watchful for signs and heed the warnings they offer. Drive Safely!
