Speed Watch on
Vancouver Island
Ken
Detwiler, District 69 Speed Watch Volunteer
I brought my family to Vancouver Island in 1954 to
work in a logging camp on Brewster Lake, north of
Campbell River. I spent 19 years at this operation,
10 of which we lived in camp. During those years I
served with the volunteer fire department.
While at that operation I held several jobs – one of
which was Truck/Transportation Foreman. From there I
was transferred to the West Coast and then to Port
Alberni. While on the West Coast I served with the
Tofino Volunteer Fire Department.
I
retired in 1982 and became involved in the
organization and operation of the Deep Bay Volunteer
Fire Department. During my 18+ years with that
organization, I served as Firefighter, First
Responder, Rescue and for a while as Fire Chief.
When
we moved to Qualicum Beach in 2000 and with a
background in transportation/traffic, Speed Watch
seemed a logical organization for me to spend some
time with.
One
of my pet projects is a speedometer check we do for
the public. We “ride check” the vehicle to determine
the accuracy of the speedometer for anyone who
wishes their vehicle checked.

Saluting our
Volunteers! |
|
"ICBC's investment in road safety includes the
support of volunteer based programs like "Citizens
on Patrol" and "Speed Watch." These programs, and
others, can make a significant impact in communities
by helping to reduce auto crime and unsafe speed.
The success of these initiatives is due, in no small
part, to the dedication of hundreds of volunteers
across Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands and Powell
River. In a salute to the wonderful work of our
volunteers, we have asked a few of them to describe
their experiences and motivation in their own
words." |
