Group Names
The next time you are in a social gathering, break
the ice with your knowledge of little known names
for groups of animals.
Unicorns
A
group of unicorns is a blessing. Also, if you see
one unicorn with another it is called a dualcorn,
followed by a tricorn, et cetera. If there are too
many to count it can be referred to as a multicorn.
Kangaroos
A group of kangaroos is called a troop, mob or herd.
Whales
A group of whales is called a school, gam or pod
Geese
A
group of geese is called a flock, gaggle, skein (in
flight) or wedge (flying in "V" formation). It can
also be called a murder of geese.
Owls
A group of owls is called a parliament, or a stare
Ravens
A group of ravens is called a congress or unkindness
Crows
A
group of crows is called a murder, muster or
storytelling of crows. The most widely used term is
"murder." This is based on the (fallacious) folk
tale that crows form tribunals to judge and punish
the bad behavior of a member of the flock. If the
verdict goes against the defendant, that bird is
killed (murdered) by the flock. The basis in fact is
probably that occasionally crows will kill a dying
crow who doesn't belong in their territory or much
more commonly feed on carcasses of dead crows. Also,
both crows and ravens are associated with
battlefields, medieval hospitals, execution sites
and cemeteries (because they scavenged on human
remains). In England, a tombstone is sometimes
called a ravenstone.
Bears
A group of bears is referred to as a sloth or
sleuth.
Alligators
A group of alligators is called a congregation or
pod (of young).
Cockroaches
A
group of Cockroaches is called an intrusion
