Earthquake Swarm
Update
August 29, 2008 - Many of you have heard about the
earthquake swarm that is currently occurring
off-shore Vancouver Island.
These earthquakes are occurring along the northern
edge of the Juan de Fuca Ridge about 200km off the
west coast of Vancouver Island. This is a location
where many earthquakes occur everyday and swarms
like this are not uncommon.
This
swarm began on Monday and is likely to continue for
a few days or weeks. Many of these events are small
(less than magnitude 4), but a few magnitude 5s
occurred yesterday and a M6.1 early this morning
(5:37am).
The
important thing to note with these events is they
are too far off-shore to cause any damage. The
larger ones may be felt on Northern Vancouver
Island, but they are too far off-shore to cause
damage. These earthquakes are also too small to
generate a tsunami.
There is no public safety risk from this earthquake
swarm, it is just routine seismic activity.
I
pointed out to a few people yesterday that these
swarms occur every year, this one just happened to
get your attention! As always, these earthquakes can
just serve as a reminder that we do live in a
seismically active area and we need to be prepared.
