Smooth Talking Scammers

Smooth talking scammers are trying to get your credit card information, reports the Better Business Bureau.

Starr Munro of BBB Vancouver Island said they are getting up to 10 calls a day from across Vancouver Island from people concerned about receiving calls that begin with an offer of a lower credit card interest rate.

Their trick is to demand details, claiming they want to “confirm” the credit card number, personal identification number (PIN) and details.

Unfortunately stolen credit cards are the main way to carry out identity theft,” said Munro.

They are also demanding a flat fee for the reduced interest rate. It is illegal in Canada to charge a fee in advance of a loan or similar transaction.

The standard recommendation: never give any information that is solicited by phone.
